A rare pair of Air Jordan sneakers that are an iconic part of basketball history are up for auction and likely to fetch more than $1 million. Michael Jordan's 1997 NBA Finals "Flu Game" used and signed Air Jordan Sneakers are now available on the Goldin auction platform. The current bid is $1,050,000.

The auction on June 14th underscores the growing popularity of “collectibles” in general and sneakers in particular as an alternative asset class.

Prices for authenticated sports memorabilia such as jerseys and shoes have skyrocketed in recent years. In particular, clothing worn by the top players during key games is in demand. Among collectors of sports items, vintage Air Jordans are among the most sought-after pieces.

This sneaker is a part of the series designed by Nike (NKE) in collaboration with Michael Jordan. It was the shoe he wore during the 1997 NBA Finals. That night, Jordan famously overcame the flu to score 38 points against the Utah Jazz to help the Bulls win.

The MeiGray Group, Sports Investors Authentication and Ballboy have all authenticated the sneaker. The sneaker comes with a Letter of Authenticity from JSA and Ballboy and is backed by the MeiGray Group and Sports Investors Authentication.
