If you’re tired of paying to file your taxes online, Monday may be your lucky day.

The IRS’s first-of-its-kind will go online starting Monday for taxpayers in 12 states, allowing them to file their income taxes for free directly with the government. Last week, the site was available only for a limited time during a test period. The test is expanding on Monday, although the number of users will still be limited.

Direct File is the first step in a long-awaited effort by the tax agency to allow users to file their taxes directly with the government via the Web without using a third-party service like Turbotax, a policy that other countries implemented decades ago. The limited trial is only available for people with relatively simple tax situations. For example, you can’t use it if you have income from gig work.

Until now, free options have been offered by private companies and through the IRS Free File program, but consumer advocates say those options were confusing and little used. The agency could improve and expand its basic Direct File service if the trial goes well.
